South Africans in Nigeria warned not to travel unnecessarily
The South African consulate in Nigeria has been forced to close after a spate of anti-xenophobia protests, according to various media reports.
South African consul general in Nigeria, Sam Monaisa, said in an email to the South African business forum in Nigeria that the closure would last until Thursday.
In his e-mail, Monaisa allegedly said that Nigerians were making use of social media to escalate the already tense situation.
According to reports, he warned forum members to stay alert and not move around unnecessarily, saying that South African businesses and citizens had become targets of threats and acts of retaliation whenever xenophobic attacks took place in South Africa.
